The department of International Relations has a total of 15 faculty members, including 7 professors, 4 associate professors and 4 lecturers. All faculty members have gained Ph.d degrees in the most distinguished universities in the world, such as UC Berkley, Columbia University, Yale University, Cornell University, London School of Economics, Peking University and Tsinghua University. The dean of the department,Professor Yan Xuetong, is one of the most famous IR theorists and foreign policy analysts in China.
Research at the Department of IR is characterized by an emphasis on modern methods and professional academic content. The curriculum is structured to introduce students a highly specialized, broad body of IR knowledge and maintains a strong emphasis on both theory and research methodology. In order to broaden students’ international vision and enrich their international experiences, the department also has established students exchange programs with UC Berkley, Columbia University, the University of Illinois in the United States, the Parisian Institute of Politics in France, Sydney University in Australia, Taiwan Chengchi University, and Hong Kong Baptist University.
The program aims to provide students with solid training on fundamental international theories and modern methods, deepen their understanding on Chinese classic and modern thoughts on international relations and enhance their capabilities to apply the basic international theories and Chinese approaches to the analysis of the international issues and foreign affairs. The graduates of the program will be qualified to be administrative officers and policy analysts in various levels of governments, think tanks, international organizations, multinational corporations and international media. The program is designed to be completed in two years of full-time study, including completion of the course curriculum and the Master thesis.
Students are required to complete a minimum of 30 credits from the following:

Research for the thesis and its preparation are usually supervised by faculty members. The Master degree requires completion of a thesis describing research of publishable quality. The thesis must be defended before a committee consisting of the advisor and at least two other faculty members in Department of IR. The research area may be one of the following:

(3) Regional and Countries Studies
(4) Comparative Politics
Applicants should have a Bachelor degree or equivalent academic background.
(1) The completed Foreigner's Application Form for Admission to Graduate Programs of Tsinghua University, signed by the applicant (original and duplicated)
(2) Personal statement.
(3) The original or the notarized degree certificate or proof of education in academic institution, and academic transcript (original and duplicated)
(4) Two academic recommendation letters from scholars of associate professorship or higher (original and duplicated)
(5) Two copies of applicant's recent photo (cap-free, 2 inches, stick on the application form)
(6) Two copies of the page with personal information in the passport (personal and ordinary passport)
(7) The completed Application Form for Tsinghua University Scholarship (if applicable, original and duplicated).
The application fee is RMB 600 (non-refundable).
