5. Development Practice: New in MID

Launched in 2007, our MID program has been a tremendous success in providing students with in-depth understanding of the Chinese economy and society from an international comparative perspective. The program attracted talents who are keen on developing a successful career in international development. Douglas Scott, a student from South Africa, said: "when I studied at George Washington University and worked as an intern in an international development organization there, I realized that my real interest in life is in understanding and promoting international development. I feel that the MID program at Tsinghua University is one of the best places for me to do this."

In response to the challenges of global sustainable development, the MacArthur Foundation created a global network of universities to develop the new master’s of development practice (MDP) program. In 2009, Tsinghua University has been selected by the foundation as one of first 10 universities worldwide, and the only university in China, to launch a masters program with the goal of cultivating a new generation of international development professionals. Our partner universities in the MDP global network are:

• Columbia University (New York, USA)

• Emory University (Atlanta, USA)

• The Energy Resources Institute University (New Delhi, India)

• James Cook University (Cairns and Townsville, Australia)

• Trinity College Dublin and University College Dublin (Dublin, Ireland)

• University of Cheikh Anta Diop (Dakar, Senegal)

• University of Botswana (Gaborone, Botswana)

• University of Florida (Gainesville, USA)

• University of Ibadan (Ibadan, Nigeria)

Incorporating the elements of the MDP program into our MID program, the new and improved MID program offers students a more comprehensive curriculum in development studies.

In addition, continuing in the proud tradition of the former MID program, the new program looks for a diverse and dynamic student body. Our students in the MID classes of 2008 & 2009 come from all over the world and from all backgrounds.
