1. Introduction

Tsinghua University offers 84 Master and 64 Doctoral programs to international students (see Appendix for the catalog of programs). Master programs are usually completed in 2-3 years, and Doctoral programs 3-4 years. Certificates of degree and graduation will be awarded to those who have completed the entire course work and passed thesis/dissertation defense.

Ten of the Master programs are offered in English, and the others are offered in Chinese or bilingually in Chinese and English.

2. Qualification of Applicants

(1) Applicants for Master programs should have a Bachelor degree or equivalent academic background.

(2) Applicants for Doctoral programs should have a Master degree or equivalent academic background.

(3) Language skills requirements:

(a) For programs taught in Chinese: Applicants for programs of humanities, arts, management, journalism and law should pass Chinese Proficiency Test (HSK) band 6, and those for science and engineering programs should pass Chinese Proficiency Test (HSK) band 4.

For applicants who do not have adequate Chinese language skills but meet academic requirements of admission, intensive Chinese training courses are required in the first one or two semesters to help them pass HSK test.

(b) For Master Programs offered in English: See the requirements of the programs.

(c) For Doctoral Program applicants: If the English level is sufficient, the Chinese language requirement could be adjusted for some majors.

The qualified applicants are encouraged to apply for Chinese Government Scholarship (CGS). Applicants should apply to China Scholarship Council (CSC) through the Chinese Embassies or Consulates in the home countries of the applicants between December and April (varied for different countries). Please find out the application deadline for your country in advance. The applicants who are not able to get CGS support may apply to Tsinghua University for Beijing Government Scholarship (BGS) or Tsinghua University Scholarship (TUS), by submitting the Application Form for Tsinghua University Scholarship to Foreign Student Affairs Office, Tsinghua University.

3. Materials for Application

(1) The completed Foreigner's Application Form for Admission to Graduate Programs of Tsinghua University, signed by the applicant (original and duplicated)

(2) Personal statement. Doctor program applicants also need to submit brief introduction of research experience (2 copies).

(3) The original or the notarized degree certificate or proof of education in academic institution, and academic transcript (original and duplicated)

(4) HSK certificate and score report (unless a waiver is approved)

(5) Two academic recommendation letters from scholars of associate professorship or higher (original and duplicated)

(6) Two copies of applicant's recent photo (cap-free, 2 inches, stick on the application form)

(7) Two copies of the page with personal information in the passport (personal and ordinary passport)

(8) The completed Application Form for Tsinghua University Scholarship (if applicable, original and duplicated).

The application fee is RMB 600 (non-refundable).

The certificates provided should be the original documents in Chinese or in English, otherwise notarized translations in Chinese or English are required. None of the above application documents will be returned.

4. Application Procedure

Step 1: Online Application

Complete On-line Application on the website of Foreign Student Affairs Office, Tsinghua University (http://intlstudent.cic.tsinghua.edu.cn). Print and sign two hard copies of the Application Form produced by the system after the application status changes to “verified”. Download and complete the Application Form for Tsinghua University Scholarship for future students (if you intend to apply).

Step 2: Documents Submission

Submit the application documents listed above to Foreign Student Affairs Office, Tsinghua University, by post mail or in person. For applicants of Master programs offered in English, the hardcopies of application documents should be submitted to the relevant department/school.

5. Application Schedule

Master programs in English: starting November 1st 2009, till the deadlines specified by the programs.

Other graduate programs: November 5,2009 - February 28, 2010.

The online application shall be completed and the package be received by the deadline.

6. Review and Examination

The admission committee in the department/school will review the application documents and select applicants for further examination or interview. The applicants selected will be notified. 7. Inquiry and Admission Notice

The applicants will be admitted after they pass the examination or interview. Admission Notice, Visa Application Form for Study in China (JW202/JW201), and Form of Physical Examination Record for Foreigners will be issued in late June 2010. Prior to this, the applicants may check admission status via the On-line Application System on the website of Foreign Student Affairs Office.  (For MBA and IMBA applicants, please inquire via school websites).

8. Visa Application and Admission Registration

The admitted students should bring their personal and ordinary passport, Admission Notice, Visa Application Form (JW202/ JW201), and original Form of Physical Examination Record for Foreigners as well as other original documents of physical examination to the Embassy or Consulate of the People's Republic of China, and apply for a student visa (X visa). Students shall come to Foreign Student Affairs Office, Tsinghua University for admission registration before the deadline indicated on the Admission Notice. Students must use personal and ordinary passport and X visa, and must apply for a Residence Permit within 30 days after arriving in China.
